Rules, hierarchy and specialization are characterizations of our current government -- not exactly a recipe for innovation. In order to cultivate this missing ingredient, we have to change the culture of government. Sacramento is one of the largest subnational governments in the world and ripe breeding ground to be a global leader in innovation. In order to do this, however, Ash Roughani says we need to find and celebrate innovations occurring now in government, no matter how small. He proposes residents, organizations and experts from all disciplines meet once a month to discuss how to bring government to the forefront of innovation. Ash is chief evangelist at Public Innovation a non-profit dedicated to make the Sacramento region a global leader in public sector innovation.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event.
