Jalan Ipoh Claypot Chicken Rice one of the new Michelin Bib Gourmand entry in the Guide this year. It joins Huen Kee as the only 2 claypot chicken rice eateries thus recognized. I had a meeting that ran late today, which makes eating here perfect, as it's normally very packed. I arrived at 1:30pm and there were many empty seats, but you can still tell this place is popular even after the lunch hour rush, with lingering regulars having a late bite.
They only serve one thing so we went for the claypot chicken rice with extra chicken, extra salted fish, egg. I've mentioned several times that claypot chicken rice is not a dish I crave for or enjoy. But I really liked this version and I prefer it to Huen Kee's. The CCR is deeply savory with a potent umami note which resonates with me. The sweet stir-fried lettuce had tons of fried shallots and judicious use of oyster sauce for max flavor too.
I've read a few reviews bemoaning the less-than-stellar attitude of the chef but he engaged me in a very friendly manner so I did not have the same experience. I went at off-peak hours though, so they're more relaxed. Total bill came up to RM47 with drinks. The food is good enough to warrant a return but be warned that this is a roadside stall with limited parking so the dining experience won't be comfortable. It's not even a shoplot, but a literal roadside stall with sheet metal roofing, which can really heat up in the afternoon sun.
