Cleaning barnacle growth off a 50 Foot Wooden Boat Hull which sat in brackish water for 20 months. This video captures a crew of 3 hand scraping the entire hull followed by power washing. This took the better part of a day. Amazing how this much growth can accumulate on a boat.

This marine service yard had a containment basin to catch all the material and water. Barnacles which are scraped off may contain toxins from the boat hull ablative paint and must not be allowed to enter the ocean.

The Green Boater advises that you select an eco friendly boat yard work and find out how they dispose of the toxic fouled material that comes off your boat. This crew shoveled all the organic matter into a large metal container which was sent off for processing. Water that came off the power washer was contained in a catchment basin for filtering and cleaning.

Hull cleaning should be part of your annual boat maintenance program to ensure your boat's hull and running gear are free of all debris. This will yield better fuel economy, improved steering and less noise from your propellers which can cause problems for marine life which uses sonar to forage and navigate. Who knew!?

This boat hull cleaning project would have been far less costly and harmful to sea life if it had been maintained much earlier - not the 20 months in between haul outs.
