I arrived at this combination of "Play Your Instruments" and "Follow the Leader" by Ella Jenkins while pursuing my new quest to adapt songs to be used for teaching online. (Ms. Jenkins set the perfect example of flexibility and adaptability when used the same tune for both songs.) Since my students are unlikely to have a music classroom closet full of hand percussion readily available, their bodies would have to serve as the instrument, and following the leader wasn't really feasible while I was playing the guitar, trying to keep my face in frame, and sticking close enough to a microphone to be heard, so that's how I ended up with "You're the instrument, so clap your hands."
When I do this one with my students over Zoom, I will do a couple verses of my own and then ask for suggestions. I have stayed away from asking a student to be the leader in a the"follow the leader" model because my preschoolers tend to be shy about performing in front of the camera, and I have mixed feelings about encouraging their comfort with being filmed. Were I doing this in a regular classroom setting, I wouldn't hesitate to offer the opportunity to be the leader, if a student was so inclined.
