June 15 is the National Salvation Day of the Azerbaijani people.
On October 18, 1991, Azerbaijan restored its state independence. However, in the first years of independence, a crisis of power was observed in the country, and the Armenian aggression continued. There was a struggle between individuals and groups for the leadership of the country.
The aggression of Armenia and the non-professional leaders of the country led it to the abyss. Already in the summer of 1993, a real threat of civil war arose in Azerbaijan.
In these difficult days for the country, at the insistent demand of the people, on June 9, Heydar Aliyev arrived in the city of Baku from Nakhchivan and in a short time was able to prevent a civil war in Azerbaijan.
On June 15, 1993, Heydar Aliyev was elected Chairman of the Supreme Council of the Republic of Azerbaijan. On October 3, 1993 and October 11, 1998, Heydar Aliyev was elected President of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
Thus the 15th of June entered our history as the National Salvation Day.
Milli Majlis (Parliament) of the Republic of Azerbaijan declared this day a holiday on June 15, 1997.
With the return to the leadership of Heydar Aliyev, the country began to take consistent measures to eliminate the problems that arose during the inept leadership of the former government. In the socio-political, social, economic, scientific and cultural life of the country, a gradual rise began to be felt, international relations expanded and began to strengthen.
