STORYLINE
Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Friday that he hopes his country's involvement in join projects with North and South Korea will help improve relations between Pyongyang and Seoul.
Putin made the comment at a Kremlin ceremony to welcome new ambassadors from a number of countries.
He told the gathering that it was important for Russia to continue to play an active role in multilateral economic projects on the Korean Peninsula, including the linking of the Trans-Korean Railway with the Trans-Siberian Railway.
Putin added that Russia is "ready for further cooperation with South Korea in the six-party talks on the implementation of the agreements on measures to ensure a nuclear-free status of the Korean peninsula."
Putin repeated his country's position on Kosovo on Friday, saying that "today, the people of Serbia are defending sovereignty and territorial integrity of their country."
"Our position here is well known: peace in Europe cannot be built without taking into account the fundamental norms of international law," he said after accepting the credentials of the new Serbian ambassador.
Russian-Serbian relations are based on profound historic, cultural and spiritual ties and have been developing actively, Putin said.
Serbia's foreign minister Vuk Jeremic said on Thursday that his government is encouraged by signs of opposition in some European countries to recognising Kosovo as independent and believes that Western negotiators could compromise on the future of the breakaway province.
Ambassadors from Afghanistan, Burkina Faso, Serbia, Somalia and South Korea also took part in Friday's ceremony.
