Video Summary:
Levodopa is used to treat parkinsonism. However when used alone, its effect is very weak. That is because most portion of the drug is degraded in periphery by peripheral dopa decarboxylase. This portion is not available for therapeutic action. Also the dopamine thus produced causes multiple side effects like nausea vomiting and cardiac toxicity. All these issues can be addressed by giving peripheral dopa decarboxylase inhibitor. Carbidopa is one such drug. Inhibition of dopa decarboxylase prevents peripheral conversion of levodopa into dopamine. So larger portion of drug can now enter into the brain for therapeutic action. Also it reduces peripheral side effects.
