The South Australian Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure (DPTI) through its Adelaide Metro division, has set itself the target of increasing the patronage of public transport. Achieving this involved improving the overall public transport experience for customers. With Telstra, Adelaide Metro looked at how technology could help. The key technology innovation is a smart ticketing system, the Metrocard, that does away with paper, multi-journey tickets, replacing them with an easy-to-use card that can be topped up at vending machines or online.
The new system uses Telstra machine to machine communication and Telstra’s Wireless M2M Control Centre, operating through the Telstra Next G Mobile network. Having this technology has also allowed the DPTI to introduce closer tracking of bus journeys, meaning better compliance, scheduling and arrival time information for passengers.
