SUGGESTED LEAD-IN:
The first court-martial of a US soldier accused of involvement in the Iraq prison abuse scandal was held on Wednesday.
Specialist Jeremy C. Sivits of Hyndman, Pennsylvania pleaded guilty to taking many of the pictures of naked Iraqi prisoners being sexually humiliated at Abu Ghraib prison.
He received the maximum penalty - one year in prison, reduction in rank and a bad conduct discharge.
But it seems unlikely the court-martial will do much to alleviate the anger in Iraq itself.
VOICE-OVER:
00.02 Abu Ghraib prison, to the west of Baghdad, is at the centre of the scandal which is still sending shockwaves though the American military.
00.10 It was here that the infamous pictures of Iraqi detainees being abused were taken.
00.13 Many Iraqis are still being held at the prison.
00.17 Every day dozens of relatives gather, waiting to visit their loved ones.
00.24 Their concern has deepened with each new revelation of mistreatment.
00.29 The US government hopes the court martials will show its determination to stamp out abuse.
00.44 Those waiting at the prison don't seem convinced yet.
00.37 UPSOUND of relative
00.39 This woman says those being court-martialed should be made to face the men they abused.
00.47 UPSOUND of relative
00.49 While this relative says the fact the hearings aren't open to the public shows they're really a lie.
00.58 In Baghdad itself, meanwhile, the long-term damage the scandal has caused to America's image was once again obvious.
01.04 Even with the start of legal proceedings it seems unlikely that damage will be healed soon.
