Everyone knows that the pizza we know today originates from Italy. However, the truth is that almost every country had its own version long before the Italian version became popular. Here are 15 different pizzas from all over the globe.
1. Germany, Flammkuchen
Flammkuchen translates as Pie baked in the flames, Flammkuchen is cooked in a wood fire oven, much like traditional pizza. Flammkuchen has a thin base covered in Creme Fraiche and thinly sliced onions and bacon, other versions include Gruyere or Munster Cheese, or mushrooms, there's even a sweet version that is covered with apples and cinnamon.
2. Argentina, Fugazza.
The Fugazza originates from Buenos Aires and has a thick, doughy base covered with thinly sliced red, green, and sweet onions, oregano, olive oil, and cheese. The Fugazzeta is a variation that has two bases laid on top of one another with cheese in between and the onions, oregano, and olive oil are put on top.
3. Lebanon, Manakish.
Manakish has a thick base with indentations made with the fingertips to form pockets for the toppings to lie in. The traditional Manakish has Olive oil, Thyme, Oregano, Marjoram, Sumac, toasted sesame seeds, and salt. Other versions include Minced Lamb, spinach, cheese, or chili.
4. Egypt, Feteer Meshaltet.
Widely known as the Egyptian Pizza, Feteer Meshaltet dates back to ancient Egypt, then known as Feteer Maltoot, it was left at the temples as a gift for the gods. it has a base almost like puff pastry. Sweet versions include Coconut, honey, jam, or chocolate, whilst savory versions include sausage, cheese, olives, and ground beef.
5. Hungary, Lángos.
Langos was traditionally baked in a wood-fueled brick oven, Lang means flame in Hungarian, however, as bakeries began to appear, people stopped baking their own bread and personal brick ovens were no longer needed, this led to langos no longer being cooked in an oven but being fried instead. Modern Langos is a classic pizza dough that is fried in oil and then topped with cheese, ham, sausages, or mushrooms, cabbage, eggplant, or garlic butter.
6. Middle East, Lahmacun.
Sometimes called The Turkish, or Armenian Pizza, Lahmacun originates from the Middle East rather than Europe and its name derives from the Arabic "Lahm b'ajin" which means Meat with dough.
7. Spain, Coca
The Coca, just like the pizza has many different versions but the 4 main ones are open, closed, sweet, and savory. The sweet dough contains eggs and sugar whilst the savory dough contains yeast and salt, the dough is flattened or rolled into a rectangular shape and topped with cheese, ham, sausage, tomatoes, bacon, or almost anything else that comes to mind.
8. Poland, Zapiekanka.
The Zapiekanka is the polish version of the pizza and it's basically a Panini. It consists of half a baguette, cut along its length and topped with sautéed mushrooms and grated Oscypek, a Polish smoked cheese, made from sheep's milk.
9. Sweden, Africana.
If you like Hawaiian pizzas then you'll probably enjoy other disgusting food combinations like this Swedish Pizza.
10. Italy, Sfincione.
Aside from the traditional Napolitana or Margarita, Italy also has other versions of pizza depending on the region.
11. Tanzania, Zanzibar Pizza.
Zanzibar pizza is Tanzania's version of the Italian classic. Two layers of thin unleavened dough are pan-fried and topped with ground beef or chicken, mushrooms, cheese, egg, veggies, and in some cases seafood.
12.Georgia, Khachapuri.
Khachapuri is Georgia's national dish, a special khachapuri cheese is kneaded into the pizza dough and allowed to rise, it is then shaped into either a flat pizza shape and topped with cheese, or a circular or boat-like dish shape that is then filled with more cheese and an egg.
13. Japan, Japanese.
Japan never had its own version of pizza, so, being Japanese, they simply took the Italian idea and made it their own, bringing in distinctly Japanese toppings such as, caramelized seaweed and clams, pickled mackerel and cheese, dried shrimp and asparagus, miso, bacon and mushroom, or squid ink, squid, tomato and cheese, and many more!
14. France, Pissaladiere.
Pissaladiere has a slightly breadier dough than your typical thin crust pizza, it is popular throughout France although it originated from Nice.
15. Mexico, Memelas.
Memelas are fried or toasted, the dough is made with cornflour, flattened, and then topped with anything from Guacamole and cheese to tomato, onions, and sausage, it is then fried in a pan or on a griddle until the base is both crunchy and chewy.
