#PrismaHealth's Pamela Schult, NP, with the Endocrinology Specialists and Thyroid Center, answered common questions about the difference between diabetes and insulin resistance.
Insulin resistance, in which the body begins to have trouble using insulin efficiently, can be a precursor to diabetes but can occur years before a diagnosis of prediabetes or diabetes. Insulin resistance may not show up on a blood test screening for diabetes, but it can still be screened for using specific bloodwork your doctor may order for you.
Those with insulin resistance may struggle with fatigue, skin tags or darkening of the skin, increased urination and thirst or increased hunger.
Insulin resistance can be reversed with exercise, a healthy diet with low glycemic index foods and with weight loss.
