In the phonogram drill, the student is looking at letters and connecting them to their corresponding sounds. The phonogram cards are divided up into beginning, middle and ending sounds to prepare for the phonogram blending drill that follows. The teacher needs to be familiar with the structure of English so that phonograms are not placed in positions in which they would not appear in actual words.
Notice that concepts such as digraphs, blends, spelling rules, etc. are reviewed in this part of the lesson as they come up.
In the blending portion of this drill, notice that the student touches each phonogram card with the index and middle fingers as she says the corresponding sound. This adds a kinesthetic connection to the letter and sound because these two fingers contain many nerve endings.
