In this compelling video podcast, The Moodie Davitt Report Chairman Martin Moodie talks to Scottish graphic and comic book artist Frank Quitely about the latter’s leading role in an innovative, in fact devilishly clever, new project from Beam Suntory-owned Bowmore Single Malt Islay Scotch Whisky.
Bowmore No Corners to Hide takes inspiration from Islay’s most notorious myth, which says that in 1837 the devil himself visited the famed Round Church in Bowmore town. The building’s unusual shape was purposefully created to offer no corners for the devil to hide should he ever pay an unwelcome visit.
After he duly came a calling, the congregation chased the devil from the church to the Bowmore distillery, where they bolted the gates and locked the doors. A painstaking search for him found nothing. Mysteriously, the devil had managed to escape.
That same night, The Maid of Islay, a small paddle steamer used to transport Bowmore whiskey, was loaded with casks for the mainland. While the devil was never found, it was believed that he had hidden in a cask, continuing on to do his evil deeds ashore.
Bowmore No Corners to Hide is an exciting collaboration between Frank Quitely and Bowmore that tells that narrative in both illustrated story form on the bottles and packaging and, remarkably, via the two whiskies themselves. Bowmore Master Blender Ron Welsh has crafted two limited-edition single malt whiskies, a 23 Year Old and 32 Year Old, which are now exclusively available in selected global travel retail stores.
