Join me on a quick tour through a small, but significant, part of Soweto, as we commemorate the historic events of 16 June 1976. This was a terrible and tragic day that changed South Africa in ways that many of us have not explored or fully understood.
Our first stop takes us to the intersection of Moema and Vilakazi Streets in Orlando West, the site of the initial shooting that sparked the Soweto Uprising. Here, schoolchildren from various local schools had gathered, determined to march to Orlando West High School and then onwards to Orlando Stadium. They were protesting against the imposition of Afrikaans as the medium of instruction for key subjects such as Mathematics, Geography, and History. The implementation of the Afrikaans Medium Decree of 1974 was a major setback, as students had to grapple not only with the challenging subject matter but also with understanding a language that was unpalatable to them in a sense. The language was imposed and given the circumstances, seen as a tool of subjugation and as a way of undermining culture and identity.
As we stand at this historic intersection, the atmosphere here is poignant as we reflect on both the bravery of these young students who stood up against an oppressive system, as well as the mindset of a government determined to utterly quash dissent.
We then move to the nearby scene where the iconic photograph of Hector Pieterson was taken by Sam Nzima. This powerful image captured Hector being carried by Mbuyisa Makhubo, with his sister Antoinette running alongside, and it quickly became a symbol of the brutalities experienced during the struggle for liberation.
Next, we briefly pop around to the homes of two towering figures in the fight against apartheid: Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu and Nelson Mandela. The Tutu home is private, while the former Mandela home is a museum, which supports local entrepreneurs and artists, who showcase their goods and talents in the surrounding streets. Our little tour continues to the Hector Pieterson Memorial, located in front of the Hector Pieterson Museum. This site serves as a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made by the young students of 1976.
Our final stop takes us to Avalon Cemetery, where Hector Pieterson is laid to rest. Accompanied by armed security, we navigate through the cemetery, eventually finding Hector's grave despite the absence of the register maintainers on that day. This visit underscores the enduring legacy of Hector Pieterson and the importance of remembering those who died in the struggle for freedom and the right to self-determination. What has subsequently happened after winning this freedom, is a story for another day.
In the meantime, join us in honoring the memory of the brave young souls of 1976, whose courage and sacrifice continue to inspire generations. We are just now on the cusp of starting a new chapter with a Government of National Unity (GNU), hoping to further free our minds from the shackles of a brutal past. We hope that we get to the point where we realise the worth of every single part of South African society, no matter the level of pigmentation or lack thereof.
