Having a shotgun that fits you properly as a shooter is one of the most critical elements of wing shooting. If your gun doesn't fit you, you will struggle to consistently get a good mount with your eye in the right position, leading to inconsistency and a lot of frustration. Many manufacturers design their guns for the average right-handed shooter, but we don’t all fit that mold. Here are a few basic things to look for in gun fit.

-Length of pull-
Distance between thumb knuckle and nose should be between 1.5-2 fingers widths

-Drop at comb-
When mounted you want to be looking directly down the plane of your rib. If your eye is positioned too high you will see your rib and shoot high. If your eye is positioned too low your view will be obstructed and you will shoot low.

-Cast-
If your eye it non-positioned left to right properly you can look at changing the cast. Cast is the degree to which your stock is bent to the left or right. Cast off = Bent left. Cast on bent = right. Many guns come standard from the factory with a neutral cast

-Pitch-
Pitch is the angle of the recoil pad in relation to the barrels rib. The purpose of the pitch of a recoil pad is to ensure a flush fit between your shoulder and the recoil pad. If the pitch is not correct it affects the felt recoil of the gun.

Many modern shotguns will allow you to make some of the adjustments we have talked about. You can check your manual to see what adjustment is available for your shotgun. You can also have your gun custom fit by a qualified gun fitter.
