Does sweeping your membranes in pregnancy induce labor? Is membrane sweeping necessary for you to go into labor?

If you are experiencing a healthy, uncomplicated pregnancy, it is important that you consider the risks and benefits of membrane sweeping to induce labor. Although studies do confirm that membrane sweeping at 38 weeks, 39 weeks and 40 weeks of your pregnancy does end your pregnancy 4 days sooner than without performing the membrane sweep, there are potential risks involved in membrane sweeping.

First of all, sweeping your membranes to induce labor requires a vaginal exam, and this can be very painful.

Some other risks to consider if you want to induce labor with a membrane sweep is the potential risk of false labor contractions. This can make you miserable as you lose important sleep at the end of your pregnancy. Another risk is the possibility of accidentally breaking your water. If you do not kick into labor on your own, your birth may require Pitocin and other induction medications to deliver your baby.

I urge you to consider not trying to induce labor by sweeping your membranes. The idea of trulynatural birth is to allow labor to unfold on its own. The less we do to a normal birth, the safer it is. Consider refusing routine vaginal exams during pregnancy and allowing labor to begin naturally on its own. Talk with your midwife or doctor about any potential risks and benefits of sweeping your membranes to induce labor prior to giving consent to the procedure.
