Since 2000, Kamikia Kisedje has been producing audio and video documentaries aimed at giving a voice to the communities and struggles of indigenous peoples. Since then, several of his productions have been awarded at festivals such as the Radio Xingu FM Program, the Kisedje People's Charter for Rio +20, Women warriors and others.
Kamika Kisedje also coordinates the Kisedje Indigenous Associations production company AIK Productions that operates in the Wawi Indigenous lands, in the Brazilian State of Mato Grosso. Kamikia desperately needs new equipment for our projects, both for the production of new films and documentaries, as well as for the training of new indigenous filmmakers, conducting video workshops and other training initiatives.
In Kamikia's own words,
I am Kamikia Kisedje, photographer and indigenous filmmaker. In 2000 I studied video and film thanks to the Non-Governmental Organization "Video in the Villages ". Since then, I have been following and filming several important events for Brazil's Indigenous Movement; such as meetings between various Indigenous associations, myriad cultural events and other crucial local indigenous initiatives, as well as the incredibly important indigenous national mobilization, which happens annually in Brazil’s capital, Brasilia. The production and publication of these videos and photos are educational / advocacy by design; it is one of our ways to help strengthen our culture, our health, and to give voice to the indigenous cause in Brazil.
We work with various indigenous peoples and indigenous Non-governmental organizations, and for different Indigenous communities. Our work has been recognized and praised with awards from festivals such as the film Txeijkhô khãm Mby (2007); the Indigenous health program of Radio Xingu FM (2006); the fiction Women Warriors (2010) and the video-manifesto Kisedje People's Letter to Rio + 20 (2012).
Among other important works, I covered the Environmental Earth Summit Rio + 20 as an indigenous reporter in 2012, and our video production participated Rio +20s "Summit of the Peoples", celebrating 25 years of "Video in the Villages” work. Additionally, we documented the preparation for the extremely important Environmental Management Plan for the Xingu Indigenous Park, in the Amazonian States of Mato Grosso and Para. I also had the honor to document Brazil's Indigenous delegation's participation in COP21 (An annual UN summit designed to help stop global climate change) held in Paris (2015), during which I documented the incredibly important political work of one of the Amazon's most vocal defenders of Indigenous peoples and our forest, Chief Raoni Metuktire.
With all this experience, and together with "Video In the Villages" and other NGOs, I have been sharing my skills and insights in photography and video throughout the years as well, by running workshops and helping to train new Indigenous filmmakers throughout the Amazon, and the rest Brazil.
My camera today is from 2012, and it is already showing its age and signs of an impending end, not to mention its an inadequate technology given new requirements for video production today, and the continuity of my work is growing impossible. I want to be able to continue making documentaries on indigenous mobilizations. This year, there are many important projects in my community and throughout the Amazon that need to be documented, and need to be seen by wider audiences. This equipment is not only important to safeguard our culture and fight for rights; we also use it to monitor and protect our territory and its boarders against those illegally invading trying to steal our resources.
My goal is to unite the art of sound and image to fight in defense of our lives, rights and territories: we count on your help!
