After a brief hiatus, the high-performance 2025 Mercedes-AMG E53 sedan has returned with a significant upgrade: a potent plug-in hybrid powertrain.

At the heart of the E53 lies a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six cylinder engine from Mercedes' ubiquitous stable, complemented by a 161-horsepower electric motor powered by a 21.1-kW battery. Combined, this hybrid powertrain delivers an impressive 577 horsepower, or a staggering 603 horses when Race Start mode is engaged. This represents a substantial 148 horsepower increase (or 174 horsepower with Race Start) over its predecessor.

Pricing for the 2025 E53 is yet unknown, but it is anticipated to exceed the previous model's $82,450 starting point. A Dynamic Plus package includes Race Start mode and additional performance enhancements, further increasing the cost.

A limited run of E53 Hybrid Edition 1 models will also be available, featuring exclusive cosmetic elements and an expected price tag of over $89,000. The launch of an E53 S model and a higher-performing E63 variant is likely in the future.

The E53's battery can be charged via an 11-kW onboard charger or a 60-kW DC fast charger, which can replenish the battery from 20% to 80% capacity in just 20 minutes. The maximum EV range is expected to be around 40 miles.
