Donna Douglas was an American television actress that audiences will likely best recognize from her role on the hit 1960s sitcom The Beverly Hillbillies. On that show, Donna played the character of Elly May Clampett. Donna played the character of Elly for all 274 episodes of the show’s nine-season run. When the show ended, she found herself being typecast in similar roles. Because of this, Donna decided to give up acting for good.

Donna was born in Louisiana and took part in beauty pageants around the area as a young adult. This led to the young woman being crowned as both Miss New Orleans and Miss Baton Rouge in 1957. This attention inspired Donna to pursue a career in the entertainment industry. She ventured out to New York City, where she struck up a career as an illustration model for advertisers. Pretty soon, she was receiving minor roles on television. She would be offered the role of Elly May Clampett on The Beverly Hillbillies several years later.
After The Beverly Hillbillies came to an end, Donna found that she was being typecast in roles similar to Elly May. She then decided that she was in need of a career change. After a short stint as a real estate agent, Donna found a new passion in the form of gospel music. Donna released her first gospel album in 1982 and subsequently became a bit of a celebrity amongst the national-religious community. She used this notoriety to become a popular guest speaker, inspiring kids at churches and colleges around the country.
