No matter how many times you’ve seen it, it still feels new: Puccini’s beloved La Bohème, conducted by James Conlon. Mimi and Rodolfo and their friends—high-spirited young artists, struggling to get by and looking for romance—are back in an entirely new production (LAO’s first new Bohème since 1993).

Created by Barrie Kosky, one of Europe’s most inventive directors, the new staging isn’t strictly traditional; it keeps the opera’s original setting of 1840s Paris (more or less) but embellishes it with plenty of surprises along the way, like scenery inspired by period photography. It’s an entirely new way to experience one of opera’s most beloved classics. With two gorgeous young performers, Marina Costa-Jackson and Saimir Pirgu, starring as the tragic lovers, La Bohème sings to the romantic in all of us.
