Artificial rain or cloud seeding is the process of dispersing substances into the air, ostensibly to produce rain from clouds. It is claimed that this technique will cause rain to fall in areas where it would not have done so naturally. Cloud seeding is also used to increase the snow pack in ski areas. Cloud seeding is generally done by dispersing silver iodide, a material which is readily absorbed by water droplets. This causes the droplets to freeze at a higher temperature. As the droplets fall, they melt and become rain.
