Stranded residents have been rescued, after rapidly rising water of the Maribyrnong River flooded properties in the area on October 14. According to local media, at least 60 homes have been flooded.
An evacuation order was issued for the main street of the Melbourne suburb of Werribee, which is near the banks of the river. Emergency services spent Friday morning collecting people from their flooded homes around Maribyrnong, with some residents resorting to standing on their roofs.
Footages showed submerged cars, a pontoon floating down the river after being dislodged from its moorings, and water inundating nearby roads and buildings.
The Yarra River also is bursting its banks, though it isn't expected to rise as high as the Maribyrnong, which has peaked at 4.18 meters. Relief centers have been opened in the area, including the Maribyrnong Community Centre, for people to head to after they've left their homes.
However, residents living in affected areas are slowly returning to their properties to assess the damage after floodwaters inundated homes earlier yesterday.
Rains had eased by Friday afternoon but the weather bureau has warned of another potential wild weather system next week.
The channel lists such natural disasters as:
1) Geological emergencies: Earthquake, Volcanic eruption, Mud, Landslide, Avalanche;
2) Hydrological emergencies: Flood, Tsunami, Limnological disaster,
3) Fires: Forest fire, Peat fire;
4) Meteorological emergencies: Tornado, Cyclone, Blizzard, Hail, Drought, Tornado, Hail, Hurricane, Tsunami, Storm, Thunderstorm, Tempest.
