things to note.
1. pelvic measure and reproductive tract score your heifers prior to breeding.
2. observe for natural signs of oestrus before considering a sync program wherever possible.
3. discuss sync programming with your vet. a prescription is required for all fertility hormone products.
4. familiarise yourself with dose rates and handling of prid and the applicator.
5. Wear gloves to protect yourself.
6. observe good hygiene practices to protect your heifer.
7. trim tails on prid. this has categorically reduced signs of infection in all animals setup this year here and retention has been 100%
8. on the flip side, be mindful that trimmed prid strings make finding them at removal more difficult. if you are doing a program that requires further GNRH injection at prid pull, in addition to applying heat detection patches, there is a high likelihood of getting out of rhythm and leaving a cidr in. I know, I've done it.
9. any animal that exhibits high levels of stress at prid insertion will likely be a nightmare to serve with an AI gun. seriously consider not wasting a prid sync on her.
10. take your time. keep things calm. this part of the process isn't particularly time critical.
I would like to extend my personal gratitude to Brian Cullen at Dovea Genetics UK for his wealth of knowledge on the subject.
