Prototype:
German Federal Railroad (DB) class E 44.5 electric passenger locomotive. Used mainly on the rail line between Freilassing and Berchtesgaden. Bottle green basic paint scheme. Version from the 2nd production series, with prototypical openings on the side sills. Locomotive road number E 44 507. The locomotive looks as it did around 1960.

Good to know:
In 1930/31, the builders Siemens, Maffei-Schwartzkopff, and Bergmann built a test locomotive at their own cost as a test unit for an electric locomotive with single-axle drive and without pilot trucks. The last of the three B-B experimental locomotives appeared in April of 1931 from Maffei-Schwartzkopff (MSW, electrical parts) and BMAG (mechanical parts), road number E 44 101. To be sure, it had just about the same running gear design as the two other prototypes, but differed in the box-shaped superstructure without hoods. Compressed air cylinders provided an equalized load to all wheelsets when starting. The installation of electric resistance brakes took into account the locomotive's use on steep graded lines. On test runs in Silesia and most of all on the curving line Freilassing – Berchtesgaden with grades of up to 4%, this locomotive put its excellent qualities to the test. In 1932, the DRG therefore acquired it as road number E 44 101 and ordered another four units. The regular production locomotives, road numbers E 44 102-105, differed only slightly from the prototype. The electrical equipment had to be completed in part by AEG since MSW had gone bankrupt.

For final replacement of side rod locomotives between Freilassing and Berchtesgaden, the DRG ordered four more units in 1934 as road numbers E 44 106-109. Their performance was to be increased from 1,600 to 2,200 kilowatts / 2,145 to 2,949 horsepower without an increase in the locomotive's weight. More powerful traction motors and an improved transformer required lengthening the wheelbase and the body. The increase in weight had to be compensated again by the design of a new frame with its characteristic openings in the side sills. Road numbers E 44 108 and 109 were given gearing for 90 km/h / 56 mph due to their good running characteristics. When the normal E 44 neared the ordinal number 100 in 1938, road numbers E 44 101-109 were now rostered as road numbers E 44 501-509. With a few short exceptions, the remained faithful to their original route and managed all of the rail service there for many years. In addition, there were also trains on the schedule running farther to nearby Salzburg as well as passenger and freight service in the direction of Rosenheim and farther to Munich. As a temporary replacement, the class E 44.5 even pulled express trains now and then to Munich, whereby the "fast" E 44 508 and 509 were preferred. The experimental locomotive, road number E 44 501, was the first to be retired in 1959. It still served until 1982 as object of integration. The regular production locomotives were retired between 1977 and 1983. Road numbers E44 502 and 508 remained preserved as exhibits at the museum "Lokwelt Freilassing" / "Freilassing World of Locomotives", while road number E 44 507 found it place at the Thuringia Railroad Association (TEV) in Weimar.
