Yamaha RX-V590, 75WPC, from 1994. Personally I think this is a better receiver than the Yamahas made today, from a sound quality perspective. Perhaps the good dB gain on the bass and treble is what seals the deal. You don’t need a powered sub. Discrete transistors and to this day, I have never seen a Yamaha that’s not functioning from normal use and wear and tear.
Has a very simple VFD, but that’s typical for all receivers after around 1993.
That said, it’s been on for five hours tonight and I’ve respectfully brought it down to powering 4 ohms (multiple speaker pairs). Pro tip: Never go below the stated resistance if your unit has an STK amp chip, but if you have to discrete transistors, keep it cool and you can have all the fun you want. Still, I never let my equipment clip and I’m respectful when things just don’t seem right. And my receivers always get a significant time to warm up.
Next weekend, there will be no video, but I will give a quick tour of my repair lab. if you have any questions about what I do, my reason for what I buy, how I restore and repair, please let me know. Also willing to share some of my eBay and Facebook marketplace secrets.
