I've always wanted to know if modern appliances could run off of DC directly. I know that transformers don't work on DC, but modern appliances use switch mode power supplies. SMPS convert the incoming mains from AC to "hi voltage" DC. So it's possible to feed them DC directly, as it passes straight through the bridge rectifier inside.
Everything from phone chargers to TVs, and even LED bulbs (but not all of them), compact fluorescents, all have switch-mode power supplies inside. and could run perfectly well on DC.
I thought it would be interesting to string a whole bunch of 9 volt batteries together, and see if they could power mains appliances.
