The small economy of Dubai has recently developed into a world city that is a business and cultural focal point in the Middle East. Dubai has the attention of the world, because it is the fastest growing city in the world! In 1991, Dubai had just one tall building and it was at the edge of the desert. Now they have over 400 high rises! Tourism and real estate drive the economy, and there seems to be a never-ending development of innovative and over-the-top projects.
Let me give you some interesting Dubai facts:
#1. It’s a very young city
In the early 1700s, Dubai was just a small fishing and pearl-diving village. By the end of the 18th century, about 1,200 people were living there. Fast-forward to today, Dubai has a population of 3.3 million. Before the discovery of oil, pearls and gold were highly sought after trading items
#2. Thirty-nine percent of Burj Al Arab is “wasted space”
Famous for being a 7 star hotel and being the fourth tallest hotel in the World, Burj Al Arab has a thirty-nine percent of space that is uninhabitable.
#3. Dubai is building its own amusement park called Dubailand
After Disney refused to built a Disneyland in Dubai, they decided to built Dubailand, which is twice bigger than the biggest Disneyland. It is estimated to cost around $64.3 billion.
#4. The amount of gold traded in Dubai in 2013 was mind-blowing
Forty percent of the gold traded in the whole word in 2013 occurred in Dubai and it weighted more than 354 elephants. That is approximately 2.250 tones of gold.
5. Burj Khalifa can be seen from 95 km away
If Burj Khalifa would be situated in Freiburg, Germany, you would be able to see it from Strasbourg, France.
