Daimler Trucks and Torc Robotics are testing self-driving trucks on public roads in Virginia. The trucks are SAE Level 4, which means that no human interaction is required (although the option to manually override does remain).
All automated runs require both an engineer overseeing the system and a highly trained safety driver certified by both companies.
The Daimler Group is one of the most important makers of premium cars (such as Mercedes-Benz), as well as the world's largest manufacturer of trucks over six tonnes. The company's founders, Gottlieb Daimler and Carl Benz, made history with the invention of the automobile in the year 1886.
Torc Robotics is one of the world's most experienced companies in the field of automated driving. Asimov, Torc's system for automated driving, has been tested in urban and long-distance routes as well as in rain, snow, fog and varying light conditions.
Based in the U.S., Torc Robotics is now part of Daimler Trucks.
