STORYLINE:
French Foreign Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault held a meeting in Cairo on Wednesday alongside the Arab League committee responsible for working on the Israeli-Palestinian peace process.
The talks are part of a French initiative to revive the peace process by arranging an international conference with Palestinian and Israeli representatives in attendance.
France failed with a similar diplomatic push last year.
Following a meeting with Egyptian counterpart Sameh Shoukry earlier in the day, Ayrault said France would not automatically recognise a Palestinian state if the initiative to revive the peace process failed.
His comments contradict those of his predecessor, Laurent Fabius, who said in January that France would recognise a Palestinian state if the renewed attempt at peace failed.
