STORYLINE:
Patriarch Alexy II of Moscow and Moscow's Russian Orthodox community were holding an overnight Easter service at the Christ the Saviour Cathedral on Saturday.
The Holy Fire from Jerusalem will be delivered during the service.
The fire has been miraculously appearing at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Bethlehem for centuries, symbolising the resurrection of Christ.
More than 5,000 people had gathered at the flower-adorned Christ the Saviour Cathedral to watch a spectacular laser light show.
For the first time this year, laser images of old icons and frescoes were projected on the exterior walls of the Cathedral.
Their originals are kept at the Tretyakov Gallery, the Andrei Rublev Museum of Ancient Russian Culture, and the Monastery of the Trinity and St. Sergius.
At midnight a religious procession will march around the church.
Easter services are being held in more than 26,500 Russian Orthodox churches around the world, including the Antarctic.
