(21 Feb 2017) Romania's Parliament has endorsed a government order to scrap a decree that would have diluted the anti-corruption drive that ignited mass street protests and criticism at home and abroad.
The Chamber of Deputies voted on Tuesday by 291-0 with three abstentions to agree to a government ordinance which cancelled the highly contentious decree issued on 31 January, the spark for weeks of protests across the country.
Premier Sorin Grindeanu withdrew the decree on 5 February, but protests continued.
The measure would have decriminalised official misconduct if the sums involved were less than about 48,500 US dollars.
Raluca Turcan, leader of the opposition Liberal Party said the proposed decree had caused Romania to lose credibility, and urged lawmakers to call for the prime ministers's resignation.
