Upon pulling the ejection handle, explosive charges detonate that separate the rotor blades from the swash plate and the blades fly outward due to centrifugal force. After blade separation the upper cockpit window fires several explosive bolts and a pair of small rocket motors ignite to launch the entire window up and rearward to provide adequate clearance. The pilot is then ejected from the aircraft by the NPP Zvezda K-37-800 ejection seat.
