The IBM card sorter is used to sort punched cards on a numeric or alphabetic field. In each pass, it examines one column of the cards and directs cards into one of 13 bins. The sorter processes 1000 cards per minute, loading cards from the feeder on the right. The Type 83 card sorter was introduced in 1955 and rented for $110 per month.
