Ed Kemper, also known as Edmund Kemper III, is an American serial killer and necrophile who gained notoriety for his crimes committed in the 1970s. He was born on December 18, 1948, and he is sometimes referred to as the "Co-ed Killer" because his victims included several young women as well as his own mother and her friend.
Kemper's criminal history began in his teenage years when he killed his grandparents at age 15. He was subsequently committed to a mental institution but was released at age 21 after convincing psychiatrists he was rehabilitated. From 1972 to 1973, Kemper murdered a total of ten people, including six young women hitchhikers, his own mother, and her friend. After his final murders, he turned himself in to the authorities in 1973.
Ed Kemper is known for his high intelligence and articulate manner, which contrasted sharply with the brutality of his crimes. He was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia but has also been evaluated as having antisocial personality disorder. Kemper was convicted of eight counts of murder and is serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole at the California Medical Facility.
His case has been widely studied by criminologists and psychologists due to the gruesome nature of his crimes and his complex psychological profile.
