Dairy farming is a class of agriculture for long-term production of milk, which is processed (either on the farm or at a dairy plant, either of which may be called a dairy) for eventual sale of a dairy product.
There are, on average, 17,500 dairy farms in the Netherlands, milking 1.63 million cows, according to the most recent survey.
Most Dutch cows spend a great deal of the year out at pasture and eat mainly grass. ... To continue to feed their cows during the winter,
dairy farmers process a portion of the summer grass into silage. Silage is a preserved form of grass.
Between 2000 and 2019, the average milk yield per cow in the Netherlands increased. The milk yield peaked in 2019, at nearly 8,800 kilos per cow per year.
This was nearly 1,500 kilos more than the average yield had been in 2000. Cows in the Netherlands had the highest average yield of the three Benelux countries
How much milk does the Netherlands produce?
A large share of the concentrated milk produced in the Netherlands is exported to other countries.
In the last decade, concentrated milk exports grew considerably, reaching a value of just under 400 million euros in 2018.
The Netherlands is the world’s leading exporter of milking machines, with 30% of the world’s market.
