Stretching while traveling/flying is not as weird as it sounds. One of the best ways to combat muscle tightness/soreness, and possible blood clotting particular when flying is to stretch before, during (frequent stretch breaks during long flights), and after your flight. Stretching will get the stagnant blood flowing and moving and promote much-needed circulation. Read on for instructions on how-to properly do these stretches:
✅ Torso twists - start moving/stretching dynamically by gently twisting/rotating the body back & forth in a controlled manner. Aim for 30 seconds to 1 full minute.
✅ Lateral/side bend (crescent moon) - same concept above, plus holding the stretch on each side for 15-30sec. after dynamically flowing from one side to the other for 30sec to a full minute. Clasp hands together and bend to one side, then switch.
✅ Spinal extension (showing a modified cobra here) - it’s very important to relax the shoulders as you open your chest and lengthen the back. Breathe into spine and hold for 30sec.
✅ Seated cat/cow stretch - what a wonderful way to restore circulation in the spine while combatting tightness and soreness from prolonged seating. Deep inhale as you lengthen and round the back with full exhales. Complete for 30sec.
✅ Seated pigeon/figure 4 - place one foot/ankle into other leg (slightly above the knee), inhale deep then slightly lean forward as you exhale fully and hold for 30sec., then reach behind you for a gentle twist (complete both sides).
✅ Upper/mid back stretch - interlace hands in front of you as you inhale and generously round as you exhale. Hold for 30 sec.
✅ End with a heart/chest opener by either posing your hands behind your head keeping the chest and elbows open, breathe in-breathe out, and hold for 30sec.
Happy traveling! ✈️ 🚘
