In a closed-door meeting of her Conservative Party, British Prime Minister Theresa May offered to step down if her already twice-defeated EU divorce deal passes.
May said she recognises “a desire for a new approach” now that the second phase of the Brexit negotiations have started. The UK was originally due to leave the EU on March 29 but the EU granted an extension until April 12 due to the lack of a British exit strategy.
May’s offer to step down is seen as a last-ditch attempt to persuade rebels in her own party to back her. Some members of parliament who previously voted against May’s plan said they would consider backing her deal if a new leader guides the next round of negotiations with the EU.
On the same day as May’s dramatic announcement, British lawmakers voted down eight alternative Brexit plans. Some keep close ties to the EU, some call for a second referendum and some for a no-deal Brexit. This possibly strengths May’s claim that her deal is the best way forward.
If May’s Brexit plan is approved the EU would push Brexit to May 22.
