The Voyager 1 spacecraft recently made a remarkable discovery in the depths of interstellar space.
As the most distant man-made object from Earth, Voyager 1 is currently located around 24 billion kilometers (15 billion miles) away. To the astonishment of astronomers, the spacecraft picked up a mysterious hum. This hum turned out to be plasma waves – a hot, diffuse, ionized gas consisting of electrons separated from their atoms.
Usually, this gas is found in interstellar space, where it interacts with shock waves produced by the sun. These interactions cause instabilities in electron motion, generating plasma waves. However, Voyager 1 detected this hum in a region seemingly unaffected by the sun, which was unexpected. The hum persisted for nearly three years, making it the lengthiest continuous plasma signal ever recorded by Voyager 1.
This extraordinary discovery sparks numerous questions about the universe and the potential wonders that exist beyond our current understanding.
