A lot has changed in Japan since the 1990s, when policy-makers in Washington D.C. last paid very close attention to the country. Since then, Japanese politics, political economy, and geopolitical standing have evolved significantly. The former “junior colleague” of U.S. military interests in Asia is suddenly a partner with its own agenda and geostrategies. As Asian power dynamics are evolving, how has the interaction at the State Department level changed? What does the newly emerging partnership look like?
