Mateo Flecha el viejo (elder): Riu riu chiu, a Spanish Christmas carol (1556)
This Christmas carol from the famed Cancionero de Uppsala is not based on any liturgical text and was likely intended as a popular song for all audiences. Each phrase is short in length, simple in meaning and appropriate even for young children. It is joyful and optimistic both in music and narrative. This so-called villancico is comprised of a simple back and forth exchange between a bass soloist and the full chorus which repeats the same hymn 8 times.
I used the MIDI file created by James Gibb which can be found on the website CPDL.org . I slowed the tempo a bit and adjusted the matching text in a few spots, especially at the cadences. I tweaked the Spanish language voice encoder MAIKA and the Vocaloid 4 software to simulate 16th century Spanish pronunciation. The instrumental sounds (recorder, lute, harp and bass viol) were generated using the iPhone app MusicStudio2.
Text:
Chorus:
Riu riu chiu, la guarda ribera;
Dios guardo el lobo de nuestra cordera.
1. El lobo rabioso la quiso moder,
Mas Dios poderoso la supo defender;
Quisola hazer que no pudiese pecar,
Ni aun original esta Virgen no tuviera.
Christo patriarca, de carne vestido;
y viene a reparar de todos la caída;
es la luz del día aqueste mozuelo;
7. Pues que ya tenemos lo que deseamos,
todos juntos vamos, presentes llevemos;
