In 2023, two American women set out to make history by climbing the fourteen highest peaks in the world. With thirteen peaks summited, Anna Gutu and Gina Marie were close to being the first American women to achieve this incredible feat. Tragically, while climbing their final peak, a deadly avalanche claimed their lives.
This is the story of Anna Gutu and Gina Marie!
Background:
There are fourteen mountain peaks in the world that stand over eight thousand meters above sea level, all located in the Himalayas and Karakoram ranges of China, Nepal, and Pakistan. Climbing all fourteen is a badge of honor in mountaineering, a feat first achieved by Italian climber Reinhold Messner in 1986 without oxygen. By 2023, fewer than 50 people had joined this exclusive club, with only a handful being women. Anna Gutu and Gina Marie aimed to become the first American women to join this elite group.
The Climbers:
Gina Marie Rzucidlo, born on January 28, 1978, in Auburn, Massachusetts, had a passion for mountaineering that led her to conquer Everest in 2018 and complete the Seven Summits in 2019. By 2023, she had climbed 13 of the 14 highest peaks.
Anna Gutu, born in Odessa, Ukraine, in 1991, later moved to America and pursued mountaineering. By October 2023, she had also summited 13 of the 14 peaks.
Shishapangma:
Their final peak, Shishapangma, stands at 8027 meters and is located in south-central Tibet. Although considered less difficult compared to other peaks, it has claimed many lives.
The Last Ascent:
In October 2023, both climbers set out to conquer Shishapangma. Tragically, an avalanche struck, claiming their lives along with their guides.
Rescue Attempt:
Despite immediate rescue efforts, Anna and her guide Mingmar Sherpa were found dead. Gina and her guide Tenjen Lama Sherpa were never recovered.
Concerning Situation:
October is usually a suitable climbing season, but climate change has made avalanches more frequent and dangerous.
Remembering the Lost Ones:
The mountaineering community mourns the loss of these brave climbers. Messages of condolences and memories of their achievements have poured in from around the world.
Conclusion:
The deaths of Anna Gutu and Gina Marie are a stark reminder of the risks in mountaineering. Their legacies will continue to inspire future climbers.
