It’s easy to just look at a stat sheet, but every single play tells its own story. He had 4 INTs but came back in the second half and brought his team back where he obviously played better.
In this episode of StudyBall we are going to look at a guy who was great last year. Led his team to the Super Bowl but did not have that great of a performance in week one. That’s Joe Burrow. I just kind of want to break it down and give you a sense of what happened in the game and why some of the things happened the way they did.
There’s a lot of stuff that goes on and I love to break down the tape. This is only a number of plays, it won’t be all of the plays. But it gives you a sense of how things transpire in the course of a game. We make mistakes. Sometimes it’s really good defense, the play design puts us in a bind as a quarterback and we make mistakes based on trying to make a play work when it doesn’t have the best answers for us. As I was breaking down the tape, there were a lot of good things to look at and young guys/ coaches can learn from it. Joe, I’m sure he scrutinized the tape and the little things he knows he can do differently. That’s what I love to do with the Studyball episodes. It’s to take the great players and take all sorts of performances and take a look at what transpired in the course of a game.
A lot of things that factored into this tape. Joe, admittedly said he didn’t play his best game. Some of it on the offensive line. Was some of it just being uncomfortable because he didn’t take enough reps in the preseason to slow the game down? Is that why he missed a number of things that he normally doesn’t miss? He made some plays in that game as well. He wasn’t all bad, he made some plays and he brought his team back even when he didn’t play his best football, they had a chance to win that game for his team. It wasn’t all bad. You have got to be able to see the big picture and not just look at the stat line. I thought there was a lot of really good things to learn on that tape whether you’re a play designer, a quarterback, being able to manage different things and making sure that you’re seeing what you have to see. Hardest thing about playing the quarterback position is when you’re just trying to make it up as you go. You’re just trying to find someone open without knowing exactly where your eyes need to be on a particular play. I felt that was the case at times with Joe. It was going so fast, he wasn’t comfortable, all of a sudden he was just trying to find some open instead of seeing the field like he normally does. #joeburrow #nfl #cincinnatibengals
