Two landslides hit the remote district of Agro in Afghanistan's remote Badakhshan province on May 2.
Reports say a mountainside came loose and crashed down onto a village around noon on Friday.
Hundreds of people from a nearby village then went to the aid of the stricken town, but just hours later, a second larger landslide struck, burying many of those who had come to help.
The remoteness of the location and rubble some 30 meters deep complicated search efforts that went on throughout the night.
A U.N. preliminary estimate put the death toll at 350, but the provincial governor said well over 2000 people had lost their lives.
Local officials said some 600 people who had come from a nearby village to help were likely buried in the second landslide.
A wedding was also taking place in the first village when the twin slides occurred, leading the local governor to give an estimate of over 2500 killed.
