In this video I am teaching you a transitional movement training: from crossed leg sitting to kneeling with an intention to improve coordination and balance and mobility.
If you have been watching my videos on my channel, you might notice that I am a big advocate for sitting on the floor for many reasons. I am not against chairs per se.
Besides more apparent benefits of floor sitting on flexibility and movement options/availability, I believe it can have a huge impact on your balance.
By adapting to sit on the floor and move freely on the floor, you will be able to react to and recover from loss of balance much more quickly, therefore much less likely to fall. Even if you take a fall, you will be much less likely to sustain a serious injury from falls. As a result, fear of falling will be less, which will feed into more fluid movement, allowing you to move more responsively.
I do have a theory (not evidence based, but based on my experience and observation as a movement expert). I tend to believe that if floor sitting were adapted in schools: elementary school- college, our movement ability would look a lot different years later.
As we enter schools, we will be introduced to a desk and chair, which starts to move further away from the ground. As we move away from the ground further and further, longer and longer, we start to lose opportunities to move and eventually abilities to move. When we start to sense that the ground is far away from us, we start to sense fear of falling. By this time, your movement availability and abilities have already been compromised, and risks of your falling are already increased.
As I said, these findings are solely based on my experience and observation, but I am fairly confident that practicing to move well on the floor can improve your balance significantly, much more so than just practicing to balance on one leg.
