Black tea powder or leaves are brewed with creamy milk, flavourful whole spices to give this aromatic & soothing beverage, Chai. Among the many variations of making tea, here is my favourite & the simplest one flavoured with ginger and cardamom.
Ingredients for 2 to 3 cups of tea:
2 cups water
1-2 cardamom crushed
1 to 2 Tablespoons ginger grated or crushed (depending on how mild or strong you want your tea)
2 to 3 tsp black tea leaves/powder depending on how mild or strong you want your tea
1.5 cup milk, Low fat or whole milk (Adjust milk to your preference)
2 tsp Sugar/Jaggery (Adjust milk to your preference)
a distinctive style of milk-based tea consumed throughout the Indian sub-continent and into Southeast Asia. Chai has a warm spice kick in combination with the heat and soothing properties from the warmed milk that make it very relaxing to consume. This drink is incredibly simple to make and is the perfect drink for a cold winter day. Occasionally, I do crave for this age-old concoction, especially when I’m caught with a bad cold or love it on a rainy cold evening along with some hot spicy Indian snack.
There is no hard-and-fast rule or a strict recipe to make tea. Every household has their own spice blend or the so-called chai masala, which is added to give it the distinct flavour. Play around with the flavours. More cardamom if you’re a fan, for example. Find your own formula. Once you hit it, you’ll know. I personally do not make any blend but just add fresh whole spices.
Homemade ginger tea is excellent in soothing stomach cramps and in aiding digestion. Ginger is very powerful and has loads of health benefits, so it is really, really good for you!! The spiciness and flavour of the ginger also adds a subtle heat of its own to the tea. Cardamom does its job and creates a magic with its flavour.
