I have a passion for these GM electric cars…I bought one new in 2014 and loved the car for many years. GM developed the Volt as their 2nd attempt at the EV market. The predecessor, the EV1 (1996-1999), laid the groundwork for the Volt to become the #1 selling EV, worldwide, to-date. GM developed the Volt, keeping in mind that the average daily commute for 80% of Americans is less than 40 miles. The Volt has a range of 40 miles, give or take, based on weather conditions and driving style…and then seamlessly switches over to a gas generator, which will charge the battery for another 300+ miles of driving, before needing to refuel or recharge. The Volt is the perfect daily commute vehicle…meant to charge overnight and be ready to go the next morning with a full 40 miles of electric driving available.
In today’s society of $3.50/gallon gas…the Volt charges on the included 110V charger for about $1 per 40 miles based on local (SC) electric rates. Comparing this to your current daily commute vehicle, driving a Volt can save thousands of dollars a year in gas. For instance…if your current daily commute vehicle gets 20mpg…it would take $7 of gas to travel the same distance as the Volt travels for $1 of electricity. The chart below describes what your yearly savings could be based on an average of 20,000 miles driven:
Current vehicle gets 30mpg: $3000 in gas vs $500 in electricity
Current vehicle gets 25mpg: $3600 in gas vs $500 in electricity
Current vehicle gets 20mpg: $4500 in gas vs $500 in electricity
Current vehicle gets 15mpg: $6000 in gas vs $500 in electricity
$14,900 is a firm price.
