Wasserspiegel des Toten Meeres:
Es wird gemutmaßt, dass der Pegel um 2000 v. Chr. mit −250 m am höchsten stand. In den 1930er-Jahren strömten jährlich ca. 1300 Mio. m3 Wasser ins Tote Meer, heute sind es noch etwa 350 Mio. m3.
Durch die ständige Wasserentnahme aus dem Jordan zur Versorgung Israels und Jordaniens mit Trinkwasser ist das Tote Meer von schleichender Austrocknung bedroht. 2007 beträgt der Pegel −420 m, er sinkt seit den 1980er-Jahren jährlich um etwa einen Meter, da die Zuflussmenge bei gleich bleibender Verdunstung abnimmt. In den letzten drei Jahrzehnten des 20. Jahrhunderts ist die Oberfläche des Sees um rund ein Drittel geschrumpft. Bis zum Jahre 2020 wird ein Rückgang des Wasserstandes auf −430 m prognostiziert. Pläne zur Rettung des Toten Meeres sehen vor, einen 300 km langen und fünf Milliarden US-Dollar teuren Kanal vom Roten Meer zu graben. Das durch den Tote-Meer-Kanal zugeführte Wasser könnte den Wasserspiegel stabil halten, und gleichzeitig könnte das Gefälle zur Energieerzeugung genutzt werden. Wissenschaftliche Studien warnen allerdings vor den Risiken eines solchen Vorhabens: Gefahr bestehe zum einen für die Korallenriffe im Golf von Aqaba, von wo das für das Tote Meer gedachte Wasser entnommen werden soll. Zum anderen könne die Vermischung des calciumhaltigen Wassers des Toten Meeres mit dem sulfatreichen Wasser aus dem offenen Meer zu großflächiger Calciumsulfat-Ausfällung (Gipsbildung) im Toten Meer führen.
