The Cedar String Quartet perform Maxim Shalygin's 'drop after drop'.
This performance, commissioned by Music on Main and recorded at The Warehouse in Vancouver, is part of Festivals for Compassion.
Festivals for Compassion is an initiative of the Wonderfeel Festival in the Netherlands, and they invited organizations around the world to help share music that has been written to inspire hope. In response to the occupation of Ukraine, they asked “Can music bring peace?” Then they commissioned the Ukrainian-Dutch composer Maxim Shalygin to create “drop after drop.” As the people of Ukraine are experiencing their darkest hours, everyone involved in Festivals for Compassion wants to use music to bind us together in solidarity and compassion by sharing Maxim’s new string quartet live and online.
Music on Main's Artistic Director David Pay says, "I invited the young Cedar String Quartet to perform "drop after drop" at our 2022 Summer Pop-Up Concerts and then, to make this video recording for you. The players in the Cedar Quartet are just 17 and 18 years old, and when I hear them perform Maxim’s piece, I hope it can help express support and solidarity with Ukrainian colleagues, artists, and all those who are suffering. And, I hope that it can help bring light and beauty during dark times."
