The anime rom com sure doesn’t feel like it did before. Why is that? What happened to great shoujo series of the past like Ouran, Kamisama Kiss, Skip Beat and others? How did we go from that to Nagatoro and Komi? I take a look back at the history of the shoujo rom com, how it’s grown and developed over the years, the rise of Shonen and Seinen rom coms and how the male and female gaze factor into each of them.
