Should you be interested in driving in Bosnia then a border crossing between Montenegro and Bosnia is located at Hum on the Tara River, known to Bosnia as the Tapa River. The process for crossing the border between Montenegro and Bosnia is thorough and the buildings are austere.
Once through the border and across the Tara River you will be driving in Bosnia on the M18 beside the Tara River which is known locally as the Drina River. This is a different M18. Whereas the roads leading to Hum from Montenegro are in good condiction, the road leading away from the border in Bosnia is unsealed, full of potholes, has muddy verges and is the sort of road where one prays that nothing is going to come the other way. The reality bites that Bosnia is not flush with money and the government cannot give road improvement the budget it would like to. Even so, Bosnia has the worst accident record in the Balkans and seeing the condition of some of the roads helps to understand why this might be so.
A careful drive for another 20 to 30 minutes finally finds some tarmac. The road leads to the Bosnian town of Brod and after crossing the Drina River it is then onto the M20 to Sarajevo. Travellers may not know at first what the ‘M’ stands for in the road designation but they will know for sure that it doesn’t stand for motorway. It is just a standard, dual carriageway that in other countries would not serve as the main thoroughfare into a large city.
Should this put you off driving in Bosnia. No. The roads are narrow and are often in need of repair. But they require no more concentration and careful driving than any road, anywhere.
